Checking a Courier Company's Legal Status

May 14th, 2011 Henry Davis

You shouldn't have to worry about the legal status of any company that you do business with. In a perfect world we should all be able to simply go out and do business with who we choose, assuming that the powers and regulations which govern us all could ensure their legality. Unfortunately it is not always this simple, which is why some people may feel insecure about the status of a Houston messenger delivery service company for example.

There is no magic certificate that a company can show you which will proclaim that they are a fully legally operating courier company, but there are some general things which you can look for that will give you an idea about their business practices and about how they choose to run their company. These might not be a fully binding indication of their legality, but they can give you a good idea.

Insurance is a very good place to start. All courier companies should be carrying ample insurance, and a few different kinds of it. They should have vehicle insurance which covers any traffic accidents that they might get into. They should have courier insurance which would insure packages which are lost or damaged by weather. They should also bond their employees, providing insurance against employee theft.

Of course, in order to avoid those situations altogether, they should have both a very thorough background screening process, and training program for their drivers. This way, they make sure that people with criminal pasts that could put your packages in jeopardy (or those with very bad driving records) are not allowed to have the responsibility of transporting your packages. Proper training will also make the drivers safer on the road.

Finally, the courier should be able to show all the applicable certificates and licenses for shipping any kind of specialized materials. There are certain industries which couriers must be specifically permitted to work within, for instance the transportation of medical or hazardous materials.

Even just by looking at these simply elements you can begin to get a clear picture of the legality of any courier company that you are interested in doing business with. Remember, there are lots of courier companies out there to choose from. If something in your research makes you feel that a courier company is doing something that you're not comfortable with, there is nothing stopping you from using a competitor's services instead.
